Guide to Brewing Better Coffee at Home
Making great coffee at home doesn’t require fancy equipment—it just takes a bit of knowledge and practice. In this guide, we’ll share simple steps and tips to level up your coffee game.
1. Start with Fresh Beans
Always use freshly roasted coffee beans and grind them just before brewing. Fresh beans have the best flavor and aroma. Store them in an airtight container away from light and moisture.
2. Measure Precisely
Use a scale to measure your coffee and water. A common starting ratio is 1:16—1 gram of coffee to 16 grams of water. Adjust to taste.
3. Choose the Right Grind Size
Grind size depends on your brewing method: coarse for French press, medium for drip machines, and fine for espresso. Too coarse and your coffee will be weak; too fine and it may taste bitter.
4. Control Your Water Temperature
Water that’s too hot can over‑extract and produce bitterness, while water that’s too cool under‑extracts. Aim for around 96 °C (205 °F).
5. Experiment and Enjoy
There’s no single “right” way to brew coffee. Try different brewing methods—pour over, French press, AeroPress—and find what you love. Keep notes on ratios, grind settings, and timings.
